Basket Weaving 2-Part Class

At the United Houma Nation, we are always striving to preserve our way of life and tradition to our community. Our people created Palmetto baskets, which is unique to our tribe. UHN is excited to share with you these classes on June 20 & 27, 2019, at the United Houma Nation building.

The class will teach you to create three types of weave baskets.

  • 4-strand or jigsaw style
  • 7 to 9 strand technique
  • A half-hitch coils

By the end of the class, UHN is hoping that these customs will continue to be passed down so that it is preserved for the future.

The class is offered for ages 8 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. You must pre-register before June 18, 2019. The time of the class will be from 12 pm to 4 pm. The 2-part class requires a $5 admission fee, and a limit of 15 can participate.

If you have any questions or to pre-register, contact Louise Billiot at: [email protected] or (985) 223-3093.
