Apprenticeship Application
Are you looking to learn more from the tribe’s culture bearers? Are you interested in learning how to create works of art that contribute to our heritage? The United Houma Nation is pleased to announce our participation in the National Performance Network’s first cohort of Southern Artists for Social Change. This project focuses on artists and culture bearers of color engaging in social change in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Our project, Investing in Tribal Artists, aims to provide an experience that not only educates but also engages and grounds tribal citizens of the United Houma Nation into our unique culture. The project will create an apprenticeship program where culture bearers have the opportunity to pass down traditional skills. As a result, three participants will learn and master a traditional skill, allowing the tribal community to continue on these Houma traditions. The program will begin September 1, 2021 and end on July 31, 2022. The participant will have a year to completely learn the traditional craft. The culture bearers for the 21-22 award year will be Grayhawk Perkins (storytelling), Janie Luster (basket weaving), and Dena Foret (creating moss dolls).
