    Bayou Eagles

    The Bayou Eagles dance group consists of a variety of Houma dancers. Some different styles of dance include: women/girls traditional, fancy shawl, jingle dress, men/ boys traditional, fancy, and straight leg. The Bayou Eagles are honored to be a part of the Blessed Mass of Kateri Tekakwitha every year. Practices are held at the Dulac Community Center in Dulac, Louisiana. At practice, dancers learn how to make regalia, learn history and steps to their dance style, history of the United Houma Nation, and important values and life lessons.

    The Bayou Healers Youth Leadership Training is designed for students who are currently in grades six through twelve.     Community Development

    This summer fifty three citizens of the United Houma Nation (UHN) representing eight parishes convened in Marksville, Louisiana, for a Community Development Conference, the first of its kind in Houma history. The purpose of this gathering was to engage tribal citizens in discussion about the challenges and opportunities now facing the UHN and to lay the groundwork for the work that the UHN citizens and government will undertake for the next several years. The Conference was also intended as an opportunity for citizens of different tribal communities to share their experiences and get to know each other better, to strengthen and unify the UHN.

    Community Outreach

    The UHN bus, van, personal boat, pirogue and vehicles are mobilized to conduct outreach services. These include distributing essential goods and information to affected tribal individuals who lack resources or means to travel to the Old Store Relief Center.

    The drum and the dance are the means with which we interact across boundaries with other peoples and groups. At pow-wows, festivals, and social events our dancers share some of our traditions and culture as they represent the Houma people to the world.

    Dulac Community Center

    Found in the heart of a tribal community, Dulac, Louisiana, the Dulac Community Center is alive and open to serve the community. Many different programs are offered through the Dulac Community Center. Executive director, Jamie Billiot, has been working to revive the DCC in order to serve the people of the Dulac community.

    GFC Youth Leadership Training, Tunica-Biloxi Pow Wow

    The United Houma Nation (UHN) held a youth leadership training at the Tunica-Biloxi Pow Wow in Marksville, Louisiana sponsored by Global Fund for Children. The mission to foster spiritual, physical and social development of Houma youth was accomplished through conducting interviews with vendors, dancers, drummers, staff and Tunica Biloxi tribal council representatives. Pow wow etiquette activities were assigned to learn about traditional dance styles and drumming, traditional art and cuisine. To enhance and develop their public speaking skills, workshops were held on the proper way to conduct interviews. The Tunica Biloxi Pow Wow participants enthusiastically shared their time and talents, igniting excitement in our young leaders.

    Joe Dardard's idea for Indian Santa started with a hurricane. When he saw the misery that Hurricane Juan left behind in 1985, Joe decided to do what he could to help lift storm victims? spirits. He used his Marine Corps ties to secure Toys for Tots donations and helped deliver the goodies to area children. Joe Dardard has retired his role as Indian Santa but has passed on his legacy to Thomas Dardar.

    International Relations

    The Houma-French alliance and friendship began in 1699 and continues to the present-day. In 1999 the tribe celebrated 300 years of French Louisiana, meeting with various French political and military delegations. Today the tribe continues to work closely with the French Consul in New Orleans on several joint projects.

    Jazz & Heritage Fest

    The United Houma Nation has maintained a food booth at the festival located in the LA Folklife area. The booth features shrimp macque choux, fry bread and Indian tacos and is manned by a corps of volunteer workers. The proceeds are a major fundraiser for the tribe.

    Longest Walk

    Dennis Banks, one of the founders of A.I.M (American Indian Movement) lead a group of activist in a journey across the United States to bring attention to indigenous and environmental issues. The Sacred Run came to the gulf coast to see first hand the effects of hurricanes Katrina and Rita and to stand with the United Houma Nation in our recovery efforts.

    Old Store Relief Center

    The UHN Old Store Relief Center serves not only as a distribution site but
    as a welcome center for hurricane affected individuals who are in need of
    assistance and support. In addition, the Center provides housing
    insurance and FEMA application assistance as well as a host of other health and wellness services. Complete records are kept on all individuals and families who receive any assistance from the Old Store Relief Center as well as outreach efforts.

  • Project Venture

    Project Venture

    Project Venture has three major focus points. The first, In-School Project Venture activities focusing on developing team building, problems solving, communication and cooperation skills through the use of experiential games and activities. The second, after school and weekend activities including backpacking, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, rappelling, once a week after school meetings, and community service projects. The third is a week long summer camp. During camp, students experience a variety of outdoor activities, personal growth and healthy lifestyle workshops, along with some cultural events.

    Realizing the Dream on the Bayou

    Martin Luther King, III?s Realizing the Dream initiative set in motion the
    organization of over 1400 volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of
    Latter Day Saints and members of the AFL-CIO, to assist with hurricane Gustav and Ike recovery efforts. With chain saws, shovels, back hoes, tarps for roofing and other equipment, they swept through the bayous of Terrebonne Parish.

    V-Day

    On April 11th and 12th, many of our strong Houma women attended V-Day: Superlove at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. This weekend was dedicated to women and girls of New Orleans and the Gulf South. V-Day is a global movement that is devoted to increasing awareness and stops violence against women and girls. Supporters of V-Day include Jane Fonda, Kerry Washington, Rosario Dawson, Daniella Sea, Donna Karan and many others. Eve Ensler treated women of the Gulf South with free facials, makeovers, massages, aroma therapy treatments, yoga, health exams and information. Principal Chief Brenda Dardar Robichaux and other tribal women were given the honor to open the weekend celebration and danced to a traditional prayer song.

    Youth Media Team

    The UHN Youth Media Team is an ongoing program available to Houma youth who are ready to take an active role in their tribal community. Students are able to interview tribal elders and leaders throughout the bayou communities. Our young leaders are learning to preserve our tribal traditions through oral history with each new person they meet.
